How the NDIS Works?

We’re here to make understanding the NDIS easy

NDIS Understanding

If you have a disability you may be able to receive Government support through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Step 1 - Understanding NDIS

There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years the NDIS will provide an estimated 500,000 Australians who have permanent and significant disability with funding for supports and services. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. Therefore it is very important to have a good understanding of NDIS and how it works. Step 2 - Check your eligibility

You need to go through the eligibility checklist and answer some simple questions to see if you may be able to apply for the NDIS. These questions are only for guidance, the final decision is up to the NDIA.

Step 3 - Apply for the NDIS

Once you meet the eligibility criteria you can apply to become a participant by completing an Access Request Form. NDIA will review your application and decide if you meet the NDIS eligibility.

Step 4 - Assess decision

Once you become eligible for NDIS you will receive an “Access Decision” letter, and be asked to attend an initial planning meeting.

Step 5 - Initial planning meeting

In this meeting you will discuss your goals and what type of support and funding you will require to achieve those goals. This will be expalined in your NDIS plan.

Step 6 - Creating your Plan

Your plan is a written agreement worked out with you explaining support, and NDIS services you will receive funding for. Everyone’s plan is different due to different conditions and it is very important to prepare and write down your goals before your initial planning meeting.

Step 7 - Using your Plan

You can start using your plan once it get approved. It is up to you to decide which services and support you believe you need to help and achieve your goals, who will provide them and how they are delivered. Your Early Childhood Partner, Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Support Coordinator will help you to start your NDIS plan.

They Can help you:

  • Understand your plan and what supports and services you can pay for with your NDIS funding
  • Learn what is the responsibility of other services, such as the health or education systems, or your state or territory government
  • Connect with the community and other government services
  • Find providers who meet your needs and will help you achieve your goals
  • Put service agreements and service bookings in place with your providers
  • As point of contact if you have questions, concerns or something in your life changes.

Step 8 - Understand your Support Budget

You must also understand the different NDIS funding categories known as Support Budgets.

There are three types of support budgets that may be funded in your NDIS plan:

  • Core Support Budgets
  • Capacity Building Supports Budget
  • Capital Building Budget

Participants will have certain amounts of funding allocated to each funding category that you can use to pay for the necessary and reasonable supports you need.
