With a disability support worker by your side, you can explore your community and expand your horizons.

What is Disability Community Support?

NDIS Disability Community Support provides funding for essential services that assist participants in engaging with their communities. This support covers disability support workers who can accompany you to social, recreational, and community events, ensuring you can participate with confidence and independence.

How to Access Disability Community Support Through NDIS

If your NDIS goals include enhancing social and community participation, you may be eligible for disability community support funding. This support is available under the Core Supports or Capacity Building categories in your NDIS Plan. To learn more about accessing specific supports, visit our NDIS eligibility page.

Disability Community Support Under Core Supports

Disability community support under NDIS Core Supports falls under Assistance with Social and Community Participation, providing funding for individuals who need support to engage in community, social, and recreational activities. This support ensures that participants can attend events, travel safely, and take part in activities that align with their personal goals. Community Support FAQs

NDIS funding is considered a step towards more inclusivity. Everyone has unique needs and goals, which call for individualised plans that are tailored to support each participant in daily life. Part of daily life is having the skills, resources and opportunities to participate in the community when and how they wish. The NDIS therefore supports this through encouraging inclusivity and assisting participants in leading an ordinary life.

Increased Social and Community Participation is a funded support category that may be found in your NDIS plan, under capacity-building support. It is intended to fund activities that build skills and independence in order to facilitate greater community participation.

This particular category of funding is offered when a participant has a goal to improve social and community participation in their NDIS plan.

The rate paid for a disability support worker can vary depending on the day of week, time of day and level of support required. If you are self-managed however, you can negotiate this with your disability support worker.

There are also factors to consider with group activities within the community. In these scenarios, rates depend on the staff: participant ratio. If the participant has high support needs or challenging behaviours which require additional assistance, then this is considered ‘higher intensity support’ which will reflect in the rates.
